With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Verna M. Walker, who departed this life peacefully at her home in Herrin, Illinois, on August 26, 2024, at the venerable age of 91. Born in East Peoria, Illinois, to Russell and Anna (Miller) Bair, who predeceased her, Verna embraced life with a spirit that will be fondly remembered by those who knew her.
Verna's love story began with her marriage to Ben W. Walker, who left this world on July 2, 1989. Together, they created a family that reflects the warmth and kindness Verna so generously shared throughout her life. She is survived by her children: Don Walker and Joyce Cato of Herrin, Darlene (Walker Frye) and James Wooldridge of Carterville, Darrell Walker of Royalton, Dwayne Walker of Herrin, and Debra (Walker) and Greg Snider of Florida. Her legacy of love continues through her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry a piece of her spirit in their hearts.
For many years, Mrs. Walker dedicated her time and talents to the West Side School cafeteria and the Herrin Hospital dietary department providing nourishment and warmth to countless children and patients. Her commitment to her community shone brightly, and she retired in 2007, leaving behind a lasting impact on those she served.
A memorial service celebrating her remarkable life will be held at the First Christian Church in Carterville on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at 11:00 AM. The Van Natta Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements. Verna M. Walker will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
