William Ray “Bill” Burks transitioned to his heavenly home on Sunday, March 30, 2025. A devoted son, father, and grandfather, Bill’s life was a testament to his unwavering commitment to family and his country. He proudly served in both the Army and Air Force Reserves, carrying a spirit of dedication that he infused throughout his life.
Bill had a passion for automotive racing, which shone brightly during his time as a former USAC sprint car driver and an avid NASCAR fan. His love for the open road was matched only by his dedication to his career in the automotive industry, where he made lasting contributions over several decades.
He leaves behind a cherished family, including his beloved daughter Amy (T. J.) Gentry and son Chad (Holly) Burks. Bill was a proud grandfather to Ireland (Stephen) Dillard, Gwyneth (Joel) Watson, Ashton Gentry, Bryndle (Shane) McCowen, Jesse Gentry, Jaxton Burks, and Jude Gentry, and a delighted great-grandfather to Miles Watson and Darcy Dillard.
Though he is reunited with his parents, Bill and Lois Burks, and his brother, Jeff Burks, he will be profoundly missed by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Bill’s life will be held on Friday, April 4, 2025, at 11 am at Van Natta Funeral Home in Herrin, with Rev. T. J. Gentry officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 am, followed by interment at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion.
In honor of Bill’s legacy, memorial contributions may be made to the New Covenant Christian School of West Frankfort, reflecting his enduring legacy of love and support for his community.
